I just finished an interesting book by G.F. Clarke titled Six Salmon Rivers and Another and in it he makes a brief reference to this portage trail. It began on the St John river just above Bristol at the Shikatehawk Stream. It looks as though one might be able to pole up this stream and then up Green Brook, down Lake Brook and onto the South Branch of the Southwest. I could be way off in this assumption though. Does anyone have any knowledge of this ancient portage?

Looks cool in tha atlas. My uncle says the Sh..hawk is steep and rough. You'd need good water and a strong back, I'd expect.
I'll mention it to my portage-crazy buddy Sammy Solo, see what he knows.

I almost went and did that one last spring. I did the maine woods section of the St. John and was planning to meet the boys for a second trip on the Miramichi. Never really scouted the take-out on the St. John, but since I have a boat cart, the portage is simply a matter of following the road up the hill to the put-in. Woulda made for a cool trip from Fifth St. John pond to the mouth of the Miramichi on the Atlantic.
