As I walked into the house last night after an evening of beer, wings and rings at the local snowmobile club, I heard a strange sound..... first I thought it was an approaching car, but it didn't seem to get louder and there were no headlights either....so I paused on the steps of the house and listened and listened.... then I realized it was my river talking to me.... saying a gentle hello after being asleep all winter under a thick blanket of snow and ice....
What a sweet sound it was too! The ice has started to bunch up in places and after the rain last night, we might end up with a bit of an ice flow this year. I know there were many cars up and driving around... the ice watchers have also heard the call of the river.....

Made an attempt to run River Phillip today in NS! The water was insanely fast. After losing a canoe and kayak out of group, we decided to call it a day. Let paddling season begin!

Linda,
Nice to hear from you.
Did you go into your shed and stroke your boat, and tell her you would be taking her out soon? My boat is still under wraps, but it won't be long.
How is the road from Whites Brook into twenty-seven mile pool on the Upsalquitch? I don't imagine it will be open until June. I dream of making it back up there, and this may be the year.

I didn't go out to the shed, but did come in and check my schedule for the summer, to see what days I had off and make plans for a few runs this spring/summer. The May 24 weekend sounds nice and I'm on my 8 day stretch too, so it's a possibility to go from the 10 mile down and stay at the Forks for a night.
Snow is disappearing pretty quickly up here with all the rain, so the White's Brook Road will probably be opening in May, I know we ran it 4 years ago on the May 24 weekend and the road was lovely, practically better than the highway. I'll ask my forestry/DNRE/DFO contacts about road conditions and get back to you.
Right now, there's a nice ice jam right out in front of the house and probably a few more around on the Upsalquitch. I know the Restigouche ice pack was solid as of yesterday. As much as I don't like the extra traffic of the "ice watchers", I think I might go out for a little drive this afternoon and grab a few shots of the ice.

Some nice, Linda.
When I was a kid, we lived right on the shore of the Saint John. This was before they built the Mactaquac Dam. I remember seeing the ice run on that huge river. It was breathtaking, hunks of ice as big as trucks tumbling, smashing and groaning.
Now the ice melts away without a whimper. So your pictures made me feel a little nostalgic for the river before it was dammed up.

We where lucky enough to see the jam in Marysville just below th bridge let go , we where about 15 feet away from the water on my friends deck Steve Maccausland(tire #15), now i see why people always watch it, wicked display of natures power. On my way in town Friday i saw someone putting in at Estey's bridge, i gave them a honk of jealously and that sealed the deal i'm hitting the river this week. Has anyone run the Nasis? How was it and from where to where? All info greatly appreciated.
