Just finished a great trip down the Mattawamkeag in Maine. It is about a 3 hour drive from Fredericton. Water levels are high enough most of the summer. They say not to run it below 300 cfs and we had 1500 cfs for this trip. It seemed to be a perfect level...not too high nor low. Things looked a little iffy on Friday with warnings of flooding in the area, but all was well when we arrived. We stayed at the Wilderness Park friday night. Peter the park super shuttled us early saturday morning to Kingman for a very reasonable fee. He was very friendly and helpful. Here are some pictures. mitchellamos.spaces.live.com

Great shots, thanks Mitchell.
Did anyone use airbags or spray skirts, or did you go empty for that big stuff?

Great pictures!
I've always wanted to give this river a try. Apparently if you start at the headwaters and paddle all the way to the Penobscot it takes about 7 days.

Ken. The only boat that had air bags was the playboat. We pretty much ran empty the whole day as our things were already at the campsite.

Ken,
The 3 solo boats had no problems, they were all shorter Esquif canoes with plenty of rocker. Ian and I, however, had an Old Town Discovery 169. Going tandem we took in a lot of water each time we hit a big wave. In fact, Lower Gordon Falls was long enough that we ended up taking in enough water to swamp the canoe. We still paddled to shore, but at points the gunnel was actually under water.
Defnitely a lot of fun and not too dangerous at this water level. Still, you do want to make sure to scout ahead first. Mitchell had a great book which described all the rapids.
