Anyone interested in hiking the Fundy Footpath sometime this summer? A co-worker and I are thinking of doing it in september but nothing written in stone. I'd be interested in a 2 night hike if anyone had a trip planned or might like to organize one. I'd prefer to have someone that has already done the hike so I don't end up in Maine by acccident. www.fundytrailparkway.com/fundy_footpath.htmJamie

PM'd ya. Anyone else? I know it's hard to pack beer on a hike but we can think of something:) I've been wanting to get into hiking for a couple of years, but I think it requires a considerable investment in small, light equipment. I have a hard time fitting a nights worth of gear into a 17 foot boat ;-) If I can pick up a decent pack over the summer though, I'd probably be game.

I think you likely have everything you need except a quality backpack. I've seen your packing Dave abilities and yes you need help . What would ya need... Small tent or maybe a tarp single burner stove ( I have 2 and could lend one out ) sleeping bag and pad (we all have these) good footware water purification tablets or drops? price ?? dunno rain gear and change of clothes. food suitable hiking (boil in a bag stuff, pricey but convienent) Back pack... the biggest investment for a quality one. $100 - $250 MEC / Scout Shop Saint John. Better yet get a used one. Maps/GPS Am i missing anything? Probably, but I'm not a backpacker. Jamie

I've been wanting to try it again, if I'm home then I'd go. Went once before from fundy park to martin's head. Pack Light! Our Packs were too heavy and we averaged about a km/hr. It's ravine after ravine. We only had three days and at that speed it was not enough time. Which is why we left early. It's been bugging me since. There is also a side hike that brings you to waterfalls that you should plan for, I've heard it's worth the effort. The friend I'd hiked with has also hiked the Cape chignecto trail across the bay on the Nova Scotia side. We're supposed to go there sometime this summer or fall as well, if anyone is interested. He said it's way better. Anyway, I'll be willing if I'm home.

I'd be interested if there was a faction willing to walk very slooowly and knew how to give CPR:-) Last time I did Mt. Katahdin I almost died and I've only gotten into worse shape since then....

Anyone have a preference on a possible date?
My co-worker still plans to do it in September and I'd like to do it then as well but i'd be up for an earlier trip if I can fit it in the work/family schedule for the summer.

I have hiked the Fundy Foot Path every year for 27 years, only in the early years there wasn't any trail. there are many short cuts you can use to make the trip much more enjoyable. The total rise and fall from Big Salmon River to Point Wolf ( Fundy Nat. Park ) is over 14,000 feet. We usually take 5 days to do the whole trail, because we enjoy the trip. A nice 2 day trip is from BSR to Martin Head. The trail is much easier going from west to east as the ascents are more gradual. Take only what you need as this is a very strenuous walk and not for those in poor physcial condition. If you want any more discussion on this trip, feel free to ask.

West to east. Is that from the parkway towards fundy? If so that would explain some of our hardship on the last trip. We went the other way.
I'd be interested in those shortcuts, are they along the beach? You don't see much beach on the trail. I'd be a bit wary of tidal areas though because I saw how fast it comes in when it starts. By the time I got my boots off to cross a small stream it had already doubled in size.
Just wanted to mention, if you can afford it the water filters are the best choice. Quick, easy and tastes better. The tablets work well but Iodine doesn't protect against crypto. I think the more expensive Katadyne ones do.

I don't know if you've sold your backpack yet Jamie but all I have is one like yours with the pack material taken off and a cheap walmart special added on instead. (I have a low camping budget) I used the original shoulder straps off of the army pack. You NEED to make a hipbelt for it but afterwards it makes a pretty good backpack. Maybe a little heavy but gets the job done well. Might also want to add a rain cover from mec.
The old pack makes a good food bag. I usually clip this on the front of my shoulder straps and it actually seems to balance everything out so that most of the weight is on my legs. I hung it overnight as a bear bag through some pretty bad rain and everything came out dry everytime.
