Hi there, For years now I've driven beside, over, around the Keswick River ... but have never paddled it. The lower section seems relaxing and enjoyable ... but I'm most interested in the upper section (up near Crabbe Mt.).
Does anyone have any suggestions / reports / warnings?
Any idea how I can judge the water levels to be sure we'd be able to make it thru without dragging the boat too frequently?
Any help at all would be appreciated,
Sean G Fredericton

you can access the upper keswick from the loging roads behind crabb. I ussually take out at the covered bridge in zealand, if the water is at or above the concrete footing for the bridge then there should be enough water for the upper section. the best whitewater on the river is all above the train bridge. I f you need more info on the put in I can be more specific.

I've put in at the train bridge, but never above it. I'd really like to know more, cuz it's so close to home.

Carm, The closest gauge is one hill over east, on the upper Nashwaak. You might check the Water Levels and Water Level Reference Guide prompts on my webpage. The level of the closest Environment Canada guage when I took this trip in early May 2007 was 18.52 at Durham Bridge, Nashwaak River. The rivers run side-by-each, so I would expect the water level would be ideal at this height .... with a reasonable margin of error. So if folks check the water height for the dates they ran a particular stream, they could add to the data base at www.nanookofthenashwaak.com/levels.shtml by e-mailing me. We'd know what the preferred levels are if we keep posting. Have a nice day, and play safe. Ken

I realize it's long shot given the short notice. But a few of us were thinking of trying the lower keswick, Burtt's Corner to the 105 section this Sunday hoping for a lazy beverage afternoon of floating. The recent rains will have receded making the upper impassable, but my crew on this one isn't seeking adventure anyways. Anybody know of a put in right around Burtt's Corner other than the obvious 104 bridge? Maybe something around or just below the Tripp Sett Rd. bridge in the town proper? Any known hazards on what appears to be a lazy section? Our backup plan is the venerable Nashwaak Bridge to Durham section of the Nashwaak river. Also if anyone wants to come along, the more the merrier; 3-4 of us right now, canoe and kayaks.

The Burtt's Corner bridge is the best put-in. I've been down in summer water, and only had to push a couple of times on the sandbars. There may be a tree or two across the stream. The mud banks through the cow pastures are not very inviting.

We're looking at running the upper stretch on Sunday 26th. Take out at where the covered bridge used to be, but I'm still not sure where the best put-in would be. Originally I was thinking about putting in on the North Branch right on the main logging road that continues on to the Narrow's bridge on the Nashwaak, but someone else suggested putting in at 'Haystack Rock' ... anyone ever heard of this place? Any specific location for a good put-in would be appreciated; GPS coordinates would be awesome! Derek

Thanks Mitchell, that's fantastic!!! Gave me an excuse to finally download Google Earth too...just got xplornet a few weeks ago and never could before that with dialup. With all this rain and then super nice warm temperatures, this weekend looks like the perfect time to be paddling!
