I'm thinking about running the South Renous from the Plaster Rock highway down at least to McGraw Brook, maybe right down to Quarryville. Early July, once the salmon are running, if there is enough water. Has anyone ever run this stretch, is it doable by canoe loaded with gear? Any kind of info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Derek

I've seen video footage of kayaks running the South Branch. It looked steep and narrow. There is a falls and gorge. More than that I cannot say.

Ken, I had a look on youtube and got a little peek: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tzoedvofcA&NR=1It shows the S renous about 3 minutes in, and obviously isn't meant for canoes There must be a way to get a canoe in down below that stuff. Thanks for the info.

Hi Derek, I did some playing around on the topo maps, from where it crosses the highway until within a few kms of where it meets the North Branch, it drops 682ft in 16 miles. That's 45ft/mile, which is as steep as the lower reaches of the Piskahegan we discussed running in whitewater boats, the Tay drops at 26ft/mile, Main SW Chi at 15ft/mile from Louie to Burnthill for comparison. I'm guessing a fellow would be walking much of the run in the summertime, and consulting the almighty at every turn in spring... That sounds a lot like the descriptions i've read of the North Renous actually.

This is very helpful information Ryan, I'll definitely not ruin a good salmon fishing trip this way. But Oh man ... what an epic kayak trip that would make then eh? We'd best get a crew together and kayak this whole stretch next spring! That would be just a little over 40kms of non-stop whitewater then!!!
