I am looking to paddle the upper Nashwaak to Fredericton in late May or early June. I would like to put in about 5 kms upriver of the dam (to avoid any nasty water) on Map 54 of the NB Atlas. Can anyone give info about that 20? km stretch of river to Stanley and the length of time it would take to get to Fredericton...Of course we will be fishing along the way!
thanks...josh

are you refering to the irving dam? If so , i dont remember any significant rapids after this point, if i was planning on going from stanley down i would plan on two days, if i was planning on running from the irving dam to town i would plan on 3 days or you wont be doing a lot of fishing. you could also shorten up the trip by taking out at one of the many bridges along the way.

Thanks Kyle!
Do you know if it is easiest to access the Nashwaak just upriver (~5 km) of the Irving dam by taking the backroad past Crabbe Mtn? Or is there a relatively good shape road from Stanley that a car can get through? Goto go baby is crying!!!!!!

The back road at Stanley takes you to Giant's Glen, a cottage community a few kms upriver. I'm not aware where it goes upriver past that.
There is a swift, maybe class 2-sh run in medium water past the dam. It runs a few hundred feet around a turn. There's also a touch of quickwater here and there from Stanley to the 107 bridge.
Take care, and let us know how you make out.

You might be able to take the road Ken suggests also, but I think the best route would be off the Mill Rd(behind Crabbe Mtn) and put in at the bridge that crosses the Nashwaak. Its not too far above Irvings dam. Kyle and I used this road last Friday night to scout the Keswick and the road is in fine shape.

OK, sounds like a plan! I will follow Mitchell's suggestion taking the back road past Crabbe. As long as this path guarantees us sunburns and a few trout! My twin from coastal Maine enjoys the NB river experience and leaves it to me to plan our trips. And of course, a few friends with little or no canoe or boat skills/experience always join us.
Would the Dungarvon from Ledgie Landing to the Renous be a comparable paddle?
Thanks Ken and Mitchell for helping a Lil Dipper!

Hi Josh, It's been a few years since I have paddled that stretch, but if you put in at the Narrow's Bridge, on the logging road coming from behind Crabbe, or going in from Crow Hill, the trip is a nice two-nighter, with lots of stops for fishing. Last time I did that was Salmon fishing. We camped one night at Ghost Landing, and second night at Snakey Pool. It's a pretty run, but check with hydrometric data before heading out as it could get rough without enough water. Two points of interest: the first is the Irving dam, in higher water this can be tricky getting through with canoes loaded up with gear. The second is Hell's Gate, but this is only bothersome if the water is real low. I think this is about 13 kms or so below the Narrow's Bridge. Have a great trip! Derek

Just a quick correction: many people refer to that as Devil's Gorge rather than Hell's Gate. Either way, there isn't near as much danger in it as the name would imply.

I am planning a Nashwaak River trip and was looking for this exact information. I was thrilled to find answers already posted.
I have been reading the trip reports on the Nashwaak from NanookoftheNashwaak.com. Combined with my SNB maps I had thought I would try to find the Valley Forest Products bridge (as I saw it referred to), I assume is the same as what is here referred to as the Narrows Bridge.
I thought this would be best for myself and the group I am going with. I am going to try to find the put in point this weekend and run it the next.
When I get back I will post a trip report and the water level.
I am going to try to find the road from Stanley to the 107.
