Anyone have any prefered lakes of choice to paddle? I was really impressed with the Spednic lakes. Anyone done the eel lakes? There looks to be some nice lakes up north to do as well.

I have done the Chip Lakes (Spednic, Mud, East Grand and North) and really enjoyed the paddle. My trip report is posted on the home page of this site. The Eel lakes are nice lakes but 1st Eel has a lot of cottages. My buddy has a cottage on Second Eel which is also a nice place to paddle. There is a colony of freshwater terns on a small island in the middle of the lake. Unfortunately you cannot paddle from second to first Eel lakes as the stream is very rocky and drops quite a bit in a short distance. Both lakes are nice and easy to get to. Good spots for camping are easy to find and the odd bass can be had.

Thanks for the info Tom. I have already read and enjoyed your trip report about the chip lakes and I definately plan on canoeing more of this area. I certainly don't mind portaging between lakes if need be. I may give the eel lakes a try sometime. It would be really nice to be able to do the lakes and the river in its entirety in a single trip.

if you want wilderness and no cottages for 100 miles, there is a great portage and paddle in some of the lakes east of the Kennedy Lakes. (Fowler Lake and north) there is some good trout fishing, and a ton of moose in there if you want to see some game. we used to go in July-August. it is heavy going in places but a lot of fun. theres an old trappers cabin in there with no roads, where you can spend a night too.

I have wondered about these lakes. Any suggestions on good put in and take out spots. Are you planning on doing any of these this year? Also, have you had any experience with the neighboring lakes of long and trousers? These are good size lakes and the portages don't look too long. Thanks for the info, Mitchell

Whyayeman,
The Renous and Kennedy Lakes country is the midway area between Plaster Rock and Renous on the Renous Highway.

Where are the put in spots? Are there roads into the lakes to off load? New country to me, but planning on travling in that area as much as possible this summer. Will have to check the Backroad map Book..

I spoke to a gent who put into the South Branch of the Renous River at the Highway and poled, paddled and pushed his boat up this stream into Fowler Lake. Then there's a portage from a northern arm of this lake into the Kennedys.
An outfitter said there's a road to the east a km or so that will get you close to the portage. Beaver dams and sinkholes in the road, though.
