Hi I'm Dave and I'm brand new to this site. I must say I have been on this site about 10 times in the last 2 weeks. Impressive.
I used to do a fair bit of canoing including a 1 week trip every year trip roughing it in Algonquin park. Since I've moved back to NB it has only been on relatively calm rivers with the kids.
We were up in Bathurst 2 weekends ago after the few days of rain and I couldn't resist the lure of the River. My in-laws live right on the Middle River, which in low levels is a little difficult to get down but with the rain it was high enough and running pretty quick.
My Daughter, 12, wasn't sure she wanted to try it. Not exactly the calm waters she was used to, but I talked her into it and we put in about 2-3 miles upstream at a bridge. The trip took about 20 mins to end up in the back yard, I did say it was running quick right. With the drops and gulley's my daughter had a blast. ;D The next 2 times we did it over the two days we were there she sure wasn't avoiding the white water like she was the first trip.
I am happy to say she is now hooked!
I haven't spent a lot of time in the Bathurst area but I hear canoing is great up there.
Does anyone have any tips for an overnighter run that would take us either in or pretty close to Bathurst?
I would like to know where I can get some good river maps and draw from anyones experience that has canoed up in that area ... like things to look out for on the rivers, gotcha's etc...
I have another friend of mine coming with me who has never canoed in NB before but ran a camp with his dad in BC when he was a 'little' younger where he canoed quite a bit.
Thanks,
Dave
