Did upper stretch from Zionville to Bantalor May15. Camped at Zionville on Friday, paddled Saturday and stayed in camper Saturday night. Lovely stretch of river but takes half a day to get set up.Trip took about 7 hours, had to drag a little the last few miles but nothing significant. I've now done the whole river as I have done the other stretches many times. Not seeing wildlife like in the 80s and 90s--both sides of the river are pretty well cut which also effects the river level. I can remember seeing bear, moose and deer on every trip but that's all in the past--too bad, but that's the way it will always be from hereon.

A friend and I did the Cains from the Highway (Chipman/Doaktown) to Howards on the Main Southwest Miramichi. Guess we were fortunate, we saw a bear cub up a tree, never heard or saw the Mother, and just go around the bend in the river and there was a young Moose. He didn't seem to concerned about us. It was a great trip, and had nice water throughout, but then again that was last year, believe early June.

I just did a little part of the cains last weekend.....shinineckburn to cold brook stream...saw 6 or 7 bald eagles, 2 moose, a deer and a swimming squirrel...haha...never knew they could swim til yesterday! Water was low in some spots but the kayaks got through fine......even some trout were jumping in the pools!

I did the upper stretch of the Cains last year again late summer and couldn't believe the dead falls across the river. I wonder if anyone went after me as it requires major power saw work.
