I watched this film while *cough* working late waiting for a later meeting. It was humbling to see the skill the paddlers all have. Also funny to think that artists could make enough money that they could paddle all summer and didn't have to keep a day job, a different world I guess.

All of Mason's films are available via live stream at NFB site: www.nfb.ca/explore-by/director/Bill-Mason/?&dir_range=m&lang=enincludes Song of the Paddle, Path of the Paddle Solo/Doubles and Waterwalker couple of other great NFB vids on bush skills: www.nfb.ca/film/Cesars_Bark_CanoeCree elder builds a birch bark canoe from scratch - amazing! www.nfb.ca/film/survival_in_the_bushDoc where another native illustrates how to survive in the bush - also builds a canoe from scratch. At one point he makes fire with a fire plow. I think they edited that part because there is no coal/char in the seam of the plow. I think the fire plow predates both the hand drill and the bow drill and is really the elemental/elegant way to make fire. Some great bush skills on display here...

amelanso Even more impressive than the fire by friction demo is the axe use. I'm always amazed that canoeists either neglect to bring an axe and if they do, it's poorly maintained, of poor quality and the owner has no idea how to safely and effectively use it. In this misguided (IMHO) era of leave no trace camping and gas stoves, proper axe use and firecraft are becoming long lost arts. Jeff
