I guess the advantage to having an established club would be the possibility of receiving government grants for certain projects or interests.
Thanks to Ken, this message board is still the most valuable resource we have as paddlers in New Brunswick, so I see no point in starting or joining another board.
I will let you know what I find out for those who are unable to attend.

Update:
A club has now been formed in the Fredericton area. We are having the first meeting on Tuesday March 18th 7:30 pm at the Potato Research Center. I will have more details on which building later tomorrow.
We would like to have as many people as possible show up and assist in the development and promotion of the club. There are several beneficial reasons to join, which we will be discussing on Tuesday. Hope everyone can make it and add some ideas.

I must admit I was some what skeptical of the idea of a "club" going into the 1st meeting.
After listening to the presentation it actually sound like a pretty good idea, and I the bigest skeptic out there.
After the initial start up issues I think a club will be beneficial to anyone in the "greater" Fredericton area interested in paddling.

It will be basically similar to the riverrunners club in the Moncton area. ( www.riverrunners.ca ) Their web site has shows a fee of $18 per member and $30 for family. I do not think the specific cost for a fredericton area club are set yet but I imagine they will be similar. There is not an admission fee to come to the meeting tuesday Jamie

Copy of message from Monique Mills about club meeting:
Here are the direction for the Potato Research Centre parking lot and entrance we are to use tomorrow evening at 7h30.
Go up the main entrance to the stop sign…turn left…drive past the old brick abandoned building on your right but turn on your first left and then left again (away from the greenhouses). The parking lot we can use is against the building. We can not park where all the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada vehicles are. Anyhow, I will be waiting and watching for all of you at the door where we are to go in.
Here is my cell number in case someone can’t find the entrance or arrives later: 440-7203
See you soon, Monique Mills

Any chance I could catch a ride with someone to the meeting?
I live on Northumberland St. and could meet a generous car-driver anywhere downtown-ish.

The initiative to establish local paddlingt clubs seems to have been successful with two new ones in process of registering with CKNB and becoming incorproated ( Tumblehome Paddlers in Fredricton and Fundy Paddlers Club in Saint John) and a third in proces of forming in Nackiwic. Club clinics ( level C certification, CPR, etc) and trips are evidently being planned allready.
You'll be able to find thier slate of officrs and contacts on the CKNB web page shortly (www.camoekayaknb.org) , or via the newsbulletin. If anyone is interested in organizational help forming a club, the the Chair of our Paddling Clubs Services copmmittee is your man: Noel Cormier --noelgis@rogers.com

Paddling clubs can be great, especially for beginners or returning "rusties". I belong to the Halton Outdoor Club in Burlington/Hamilton/Oakville area which does a bit of everything - paddling, hiking, cross country skiing, and bicycling. Cheap membership and the club usually negotiates reduced rates for rentals, qaccomodations etc, wherever we go. I organise the paddling activities (and get some trips free as a perk) and one thing I've discovered is that there are a ton of people out there who would like to paddle but don't know where or how to start. Consequently, many of our trips are geared toward beginners, i.e. guided trips with rentals available, but it's still a fabulous way to meet other paddlers and get to know various waterways. It can also be a great way for a new person to start camping - getting together with others who have been there, done that and have the gear! One of the best ideas going (and not necessarily a club thing) is an evening "after work paddle" - we have one here, originally started by an outdoor store/kayak instructor - we paddle every Wednesday night at different locations and paddle from approx 6 or 6:30 pm to dark. No cost, except for the drive and you can always count on people to paddle with. Participants are notified by email on the Monday where to meet and we'll have anywhere from 10-28 paddlers, both canoes and kayaks. Snotty people don't last in this gang, and we have a blast. Sometimes we even go for a beverage afterwards, and we end the season with a big BBQ at someone's house. To be honest, I don't think there's anything "elite-ist" about a group of people who enjoy getting outdoors on the water or wherever. It certainly has never come up in our club - hey, I'm an NB-er at heart, even if I live in the GTA. So I think it's definitely worth thinking about. Cheers! D
