There used to be paddling "clubs" back in the old days. In Fredericton there was the Tumblehome Canoe Club. I guess what happens is people drift away and no new members come in to take their place.
Some folks can't abide with rules, others are ticked off by elitism. On the other hand, it's easier to find paddling partners if you have a network.
It might be worth it if it gets you out on the water more often, and you meet new folks to paddle with.
Does anyone out there belong to a club?
Does anyone out there think of starting one?
Any thoughts?

I was a member of a great club in Quebec city, Club rabaska (www.rabaska.qc.ca, sorry its in french... ), it was awesome especially for us who were new to the sport, they gave formation and we had camping trips and great meals. They brag about never bringing a can on a camping trip!! When I got here i was sorry to see there were no canoe clubs around, so I was thinking about starting one on the base at CFB Gagetown. It could be opened to the general public as well as the military community. The big advantage of being on the base is that we wight have access to extra funds, free publicity and they have a lot of canoes on base that I'm sure we could use on week-ends. The only problem for me is that I'm not a very experienced paddler and I would need someone would knows the rivers and lakes around here who could help me putting this together. I have a lot of time to work on it this summer since I'm on parental leave but its this summer so I'd like to have most of The work done before I start working in September. If anyone is interested contact me at jfcaro@rogers.ca

The club is indeed a great idea, the elitest thing is the only thing that deters me. I am currently in New Hampshire and am attending the NH Whitewater school this weekend (for the benefit of the better half). I am not looking forward to the experience as I have been monitoring the clubs emails, and they seem to be very self righteous, pompus and condescending. I love this forum though ! I'll see lots of you all here in the future, and likely on the water. Pete members.localnet.com/~mkcooper

Yeah, I see what you mean Pete, the elitist angle would really be a turn off. Every group develops a pecking order, it's a natural law. It's best to have an informal list of buddies you can phone up and get together with.
If you find a kindred soul who you can depend on to get out on the water with you on a regular basis, guard that relationship like gold, a good paddlin' buddy is hard to find.

you're right. This weekend at the whitewater school I almost lost my mind. outback new brunswick boys don't belong in there. Not to say there wasn't a lot of really great people we met there cause there was. But most of the instructors were brutal. they wouldn't let you admit you knew how to make a lunch or wipe your butt on the river. No modesty, all ego. Only me and ONE other guy out of 80 people brought BEER! and I only had one after we took out ! So it'll be a breath of fresh air to get back to NB paddling.
We are VERY luck to have a great group of modest guys who are full of little else except laughs. Just a pleasure.
As summer approaches I'd like to arrange a paddle with some people from the board here though. Sounds like a good group already ! Pete

I am a member of a paddling Association in Moncton. the River Runners. It is good to meet people and paddle with different people, sharing knowledge of rivres in nb. They were meeting every tuesday in the spring now they are meeting wednesdays at 7 in irishtown nature park for a paddle on lake.

I do too, but usually after work. Nothing like an evening paddle.
We should hook up at some point.

that'd be cool but it might take a while. i'm having a hard time figuring out how to get the canoe out. Its too old big and heavy to just throw on top of the car..used to have a trailer but haven't got it back on the road yet.

hey fundy, how would I get more information on your river runners club? It sounds like it could be fun. I live too far out to make it there on a wednesday though I sometimes see you guys going in when I'm on my way home from work.

This is a message I received from Canoe/KayakNB. I plan on attending. Is anyone else interested in starting a paddling club?
Paddle into summer!
CanoeKayak New Brunswick, with assistance from the NB Department of Sport and Recreation, is sponsoring a project to develop local paddling clubs. This initiative is headlined by the well-known River Runners Canoeing Club of south eastern NB. In the Fredericton area, the first presentation is 1:00 to 3:00 March 09 at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym, Room A116 . Anyone interested in paddling for fun, fitness, and to keep alive a key part of our heritage is welcome. For info call 658-0434 or 382-2127.

If you go, please drop us a line here and tell us a bit what happened.

That does sound interesting. I guess I'd like to hear a little bit more about what exactly a paddling club is or does. I might not be able to make it sunday though.

I was thinking of attending that too Mitchell....
the only thing I see about it though is that most of us that are interested in paddling with others already do for the most part thanks to this site....
Their forum is basically like Ken's was in the "early" days. I've met a few guys who I believe are involved with canoe/kayakNB (Tim,Evan and i think Rory). For anyone looking for instruction or training they are a great asset.
CYA there
