Sure, Pete is right. But most boats I see on the Chi are so full of gear, food and beer that there is no room for flotation. Let's face it, you could be three long days and nights on the river.
I would use flotation in really high water, on a day trip, like creeking on the Tay after several days rain.
On the Chi, I would use elbow grease, pumping with everything I've got to skirt the big rock in the throat of Burnt Hill. I've boofed off her a few times, but she hasn't upset me yet. Sometimes finesse is handy, but in big water, you usually jus gotta giv er.
