What do you mean by the Miramichi end? You can put it near the beginning in Zionville, but only in early spring when the water is high enough. You can also put in beside wildcat brook. This is a dirt road located off the Bettsburg road. It is only about a 4 hour canoe trip to the Grand Lake rd bridge. There is also another access point if you continue further up this road. I am not sure about this access point though.

Take a look at Kens trip report. www.nanookofthenashwaak.com/cains.shtmlGenerally the May long weekend would work but mother nature has the final say on that. I'm guessing 3 to 4 days depending on how fast you paddle.

Do you think I can put in Grand Lake rd bridge and take out near Black Ville in 3 Days. That is put in on Friday afternoon and take out Sunday Night?

Definately. That would normally just be a 2 day trip so you should have lots of time to fish and float.

gotti9090,
We did your planned trip last June. Put in at the Grand Lake Rd Bridge on Fri at noon and took out in Blackville on Sun at noon. We camped near Shinnickburn on Fri and near the mouth of the Cains on Sat. If you are fishing, concentrate on waters you paddle through during the first half of the trip. The paddle on the Main SW Miramichi could be tough depending on the wind. Have fun!

We did that same trip.... Although.... there was some poor planning. We thought we could float from the bridge to blackville in 2 days (1 night). Fail. If it wasn't for some very nice fishermen from Moncton, we would have been paddling through the night.

It took us four days to paddle from Zionville, where it emerges from the alders, to Shinnickburn. We were fishing and cruising, not looking for speed. There were no "rapids." I remember the road from route 123 into Shinnickburn was rough, but we made it through.

How do you get into the Cains from Zionville?

Zionville Road out of Taymouth, following my nose mostly. No guarantees on the condition of the road tho.

You must be hitting a brook before the river? I took a rip out and I crossed a stream but no Cains. May be able to get a bit farther once the snow melts, but looks to be not much more then an atv trail really. Unless you turned off onto the nichols road and met up with the other logging road that runs all the way to chipman.

Hey I confess, it was 25 years ago, but that was the way we got there. There was a solitary cabin, and a small clearing just past it with room for our tent and a nice bank to load our canoe and push off into the stream the next morning.

After it was a bust in Zionville - I rode up to Boisetown and hit the Cain's further west of the Bauntelour Rd (spelling?)and it looks pretty sketchy with a lot of over grown alders. Very narrow but found that the river opens up further north behind Bettsburg. We're putting in at a spot with landing and camping area tomorrow morning and running down to the South Cains River Road where it puts into the Chi. Should be 2 nights on the river after shuttling and such. Water running quick and seen 8 moose on my scouting trip so pretty stoked for this. Will take lots of pictures.

What do you mean, it was a bust in Zionville? It was a good run once upon a time. Is the road washed out? The stream too small?
