Almost done making my 1st paddle (on my own...) All that I have left to do is shape the handle once I get a proper tool for this, sand it down and varnish. It's almost all hardwood which makes it a little heavier than similar ones at Canadian Tire. I'm going to figure out what I can do to lessen the weight of the next on but maintaining the strength. Now I have to go get some work done on my new project canoe... Jamie

Nice looking paddle Jamie. I can't wait for my garage to be complete so I can start making my own canoe gear. I'll have to take a few lessons from you on the paddle making.

I had been advised to thin the blade out to an 1/8 of an inch on th edges and maybe close to 3/8 of an inch in the middle.
I think with these measurements the guys must be covering the blade with glass cloth for strength.
When I get back next week I'll likely shave it down a little more to see if I can work out the weight issues.

Keep in mind... once you get the bug to work on canoes and paddles, life as you know it will come to an end. You might as well put a fridge and bunk in the garage while you're still in the process of building it I can show you how the paddles go together.. not rocket science. Getting the tools together to do the work i quite the investment though.

Hey Jamie, Nice looking paddle. I put fibreglass on the paddles I make as it allows you to cut down on weight and increase strength. As you know NB rivers can be unforgiving to paddles.
I look forward to seeing that paddle in action next spring on the Miramichi.
Take it easy, Tom
