I've installed kevlar plates on my canoe, seams to have worked pretty good. I'll likely be doing Tom's (Tgneal) Tripper in the next couple of nights, if anyone want to see how it's done. Well, how I do it anyway . Should have enough material left over to do a couple of more canoes, if anyone wants skid plates(bow & stern) bring $35, masking tape, saran wrap (no name brand) and your canoe. Cash is a ball park guess on material cost. Polylink requires a torch for some reason... bring one if you need it. And no there are no guarentees Jamie

Jamie, let me know when you go to do this; I would love to go see how to do it properly. Or, if you prefer, you can come over to my place and I can show everyone how NOT to do it:-) Last time I went to repair a crack on my old Discovery I just made things worse:-)

I'll likely do one end of Tom's Tripper tomorrow night. I want to look over the job I did on my canoe first before I ruin Tom's boat. Really I should have done Tom's first to work out the bugs then do mine. Tom's Tripper... My canoe was the 1st one I've done and i will not claim to be doing it properly... only time will tell. 6:30 PM or so, 234 Cedar Ave. Jamie

www.geocities.com/blindmelon201@rogers.com/skidplates.htmlHere are some pics of some canoes I put skid plates on last summer. used Cold Cure 2 part epoxy and the kevlar was pre-cut. I suggest using a garbage bag to catch drips, and masking tape to get a nice outline around the skid plates. I also found that dipping the kevlar right into the mixing bucket bought more time to get it on how i liked. These proved to be rock solid. The epoxy really seems to set quicker the warmer it is outside... 25mins and the epoxy was solidifying. I sanded the hull pretty well too.. seems that they hold better that way. have fun!

Nice work, Rylan. Much cleaner and more presentable than my job.

Hey Jamie, The skid plates actually look pretty good. How did you get it green on your canoe? Did you add dye to the epoxy? Tom

Spray paint.... it will scratch off pretty easily.
There are still pieces of saran wrap stuck on the skid plates (yours and mind) that need to wear off before i'd bother painting them again.

I was right proud of my new skidplates last fall. They didn't last long before they cracked and chipped off. I'm down to the last few threads of my hull fibre again. I can almost poke my finger through the crack. Anyone have anything that works? I once saw a picture of an old bicycle tire epoxied to the front of a canoe at the bow. How would one glue it on? Gnash

I have some kevlar left over if you want to try to fix the gash.

Sounds good, Jamie. Unless it's the Old Town patch kit with the yellow fabric beaver tails and the black and white packets you knead together and brush on. That's what's on there now.
My garage is jammed with my son's furniture while he is between houses. We're leaving for a two-week trip while they borrow our house, so I can't work on my boat till later next month.
So hold that thought.
Should I remove the remnants of the skid plate? I suppose, eh. I bet I can pry it off with a hammer.
