It would be nice to have a chart that correlates water levels with canoeing suitability. Like, 1.7 is the minimum for the Bartholomew. 1.9 for the Nashwaak, et cetera. If folks were to help me out, by reporting on their experiences on whatever river at whichever level (below such-and-such a level you drag, above t'other level it's a great float, etc.), I could set up a simple chart on my site as a reference guide. We'll use the fed's hydrometric stations linked off my web site. I'll set up a page and we'll try it out. It might take a while, but it could be a good resource if folks pitch in. Whaddaya think? See www.nanookofthenashwaak.com/levels.shtml for more info.

Thanks, Pete. That's an amazing site. I don't know if I could mount such a page, but we'll see.
I thought I would just add a table row under each stream to add each report I get. If we got several entries for any one stream, then we could make comparisons and draw conclusions.

maybe we could also so something for the rivers and streams that don't have gauges, maybe some sort of visual marker (concrete piers or something) kinda like your report on the tay.

I know the american whitewater site is extensive, but it was set up nice as far as the links to each river where they had tables such as:
2.1 scratchy 2.5 low 3.0 medium 4.0 high 6.0 stupid
and pictures showing the guage and river if available. They also have what they call river keepers where there is one person who may live close to a river who makes a point on keeping the site updated. eg. runs it early each year to update on sweepers and other changes. I can tell you with these floods down there, and the ones we had last fall down there, they drastically rearrange the rivers.
AND so we go. The official MAY 24 long weekend starts momentarily.
This will be the first year that I haven't done ALL of my packing within 15 minutes of leaving for 4 days. The first year I don't use a shovel and a grocery cart to get my food. The first year I don't bring 72 beer and a quart of Crown for 4 days. Only 48 and a qurt this year.
Growing up, 10 years later than most but I think I am finally getting it.
Eh la Pete

Kyle, that's a good idea. I can incorporate that.
Pete, I'm going with my bro and two teenagers. I'll have to suspend the flat-per-person-per-day rule again this year. It sounds like a couple of cool ones during the day and some chilled campfire brew this weekend.
We haven't decided where we're going yet. It could be more for fishing than for fast water running, especially with the low water we're expecting.
Good luck on the Chi!

No kidding low water!!!! I was just checking the guage for the St. Croix, WAY down. It should be flowing around 800 to 1000. It's at 226!! Hoping they open the dam on Saturday, otherwise going to scrap a few spots I think. Shame some of New Englands rain didn't dump on us!!

ken, try waterdata.usgs.gov/me/nwis/uv?01018500 there's a girl down there that has a shuttle and rental service she has a website called canoose outpost.she also has a link to water levels on the st. croix. i've also used her shuttle service a few times very reasonable rates, saves at least an hour of time in the morning and she keeps your vehicle at her house that night so you don't have to worry about vandalism.
