Hello: I am Paul C from Gambier Island in BC. I at one time lived on Grand Manan. I come to NB annually in the fall and wish to do a week or two's canoeing or kayaking.
Are there suggested rivers to camp paddle or maps available? Any suggestions would be wonderful...I will be out your way after Thanksgiving.
Thank You
Paul Cosulich

Well, if there's any rain before you come, there is any number of rivers you could run. It depends on where in NB you are based, and what type of kayaking/paddling you would like to do.
If there's no rain, you might consider sea kayaking, perhaps round Cape Enrage ... although I have never kayaked in my life.
Keep talking, maybe we can help you get on the right piece of water yet.

st. croix is close to you in grand manan, has good water levels due to dam control and is not crowded after labor day. The waterway commision stops maintain the camp sites after thanskgiving though so you'll have to squat.

thanks for the two notes I can go anywhere in the Provicne...I di the Oromocto last year and will try the St. Croix given Pete's advice. Wheredo you drop in to it.
I am a grade II/ III white water kayaker (started last year) and have limited canoeing experience but am willing to swim!
Where do you get you maps?
I like to flow along and check out the scenery, am looking for picturesque narrower rivers (I did the Saint John river from Fredricton to Saint John one year (including Washademoak, Grand Lake and Canan River) by boat).
I would like to camp enroute or stay in rental accomodations.
I sure appreciate the help.

www.stcroix.org/waterwaymap.htmlGenerally we put in at St. Croix and see the river on the attached link that intersects the St. Croix just south of loon bay ? that is the canoose river, accessed from rte 745. You can get maps of the restigouche, tobique, nepisiguit, st. croix waterway and southwest miramichi from service NB: www.web11.snb.ca/snb8000/dept.aspx?DeptID=2&l=eor you can get the st. croix waterway map from the waterway commision office itself, McAdam town hall and tourist bureau. The only reason I suggest that one is because of the dams, great water levels. AND NO CROWDS after labour day, you'll have a beauty trip no matter where you go. www.stcroix.org/Good luck and if you need a hand with shuttling or anything let us know. Pete

Paul, The St. Croix River is beautiful in the Fall. Perhaps you will spot the elusive Cardinal flower that grows along the St. Croix and blooms in the fall. It is a very rare flower for N.B. www.bbg.org/gar2/topics/wildflower/1999fa_cardinal.htmlA nice 2-3 day trip is the "dam to dam" run from St. Croix to Grand Falls Flowage. The headwater lakes of the St. Croix are a nice paddle if you are looking for some flat water action. Enjoy your trip and don't forget to post a trip report, Tom
