A couple of us went June 1 - 3. The water was normal for June (not much at all) there were a few low spots where we dragged our bottoms but we are used to it.
The weather was great... almost too good. The heat from the sun sucked the life right out of us for saturday night.
I tried to do some poleing with no success.... couldn't figure out the steering with the breeze pushing my canoe around.
I did manage to stand and paddle almost the entire way. It made what are becoming straight forward rapids a little more entertaining (went through Burnthill standing up too).
I'm done canoeing until a planned trip on the St.Croix Aug.4th or 5th.... summer is here and family awaits...gotta pack up the camper.

Hey Jamie, Did you, Joe or Pat take any pictures? Go to this site and search for Terra 317; www.lifeonterra.com/It is a short film on poling a canoe. The poling starts about a minute into the film. Tom Tom

Thanks, Tom.
He's good at it, for sure. All the polers I've met from New England use aluminum poles. I try a wooden pole, but my spruce pole flexes so much I can't push my way upstream. But I'm still not convinced aluminum is the way to go. Clank clank.
I noticed a number on the hull of his boat. Vermont must be one of those states which require canoe registration, and ya gotta pay to paddle.

Hey Ken, I think it is becoming more difficult to find black spruce in New England with which to buid a traditional pole. Also I think the aluminum poles can be flexed so that they can be stowed within the length of the canoe. I am interested in learning how to pole, do you have any recommendations as how to go about it. Should I just get a pole and try to teach myself or is there somewhere I could go to get some instruction? How did you learn to pole? Take it easy, Tom

Tom, Check out www.canoekayaknb.org/Courses.aspx. They have given clinics in poling in previous summers. I believe the best polers live in the Miramichi area. There is a link on this page for inquiries. Ken

Ken, I believe you have some facts mistaken! The best polers are from New England, especially the best two from NH and Mass! Tom, I have found the best thing to do is go out and try it. I have found that using your hips as a pivot point is key to making it work. Get your feet in the chines of your boat and keep your knees bent works well and helps with balance. Practice is the best way to learn. After 10+ yrs doing this poling thing I learn something new every time I go out. Good luck. Scooter

Thanks for the advice. Are you able to pole upstream?
