Man, the lines on the Ogilvies are sweet and true. Your fotos make me wish I had never abused my 16 footer.
And that pic of the NBMSWM, makes me long to put in at the train bridge again. Something about a tranquil meandering alder stream, I guess, tugs on me. Was this taken upstream of the train bridge?

Looks like it would be difficult to paddle solo by turning around in the front seat, seeing how that thwart sits right where a paddler would bend his knees.

That picture was taken a couple of miles above the bridge at the foot of the Alder Grounds . My son and I were going up river for an over night trout fishing trip . If your going to paddle the 18' or 20' solo it's done by kneeling just ahead of the rear cross bar , with your rear resting on the bar . A lot of the time there's not even a paddle in the canoe , these canoes were built to be poled either going up stream or down .

Next question: How did you get above the bridge? I assume you mean the railroad bridge north of Juniper. Irving wouldn't let me up there when I tried to explore that stream.

Yes above the railway bridge . During the month of June only Irving allows a limited # of people up there to fish . I'm not sure that they can restrict river travel at any time of the year , but they certainly can control traffic on the roads and property that they own . ie. If you wanted to put in at the railway bridge in July and pole to Beadle I don't think you could be stopped , just don't plan on camping up there . Check with Jeff Gaunce , an Irving warden .

what a beautiful canoe; you did a very good job restoring it. Is this the one you had fishing on the NW Upsalquitch?

No it's a different canoe . I have two other Ogilvys , a 20' and an 18' , the one on the NW was the other 20' .

My neighbor builds the most beautiful wooden canoes; he does the 26' "motor boat" that is so common up here, but also makes a droolworthy 20' one. I keep saying he's going to build me one, but so far it hasn't been in the budget... I've got to stop buying horses!!!
When we were kids, my parents always had a wooden canoe. I think we spent almost every weekend in it. I know my Dad still has it, it's parked in the shed somewhere, probably in really rough shape. It's a shame really.
My Coleman is unbreakable(and great for scraping over rocks in the middle of the summer when you drag the canoe more than paddle it), but I love a wooden canoe and want to have one someday, just for fall and spring runs.
Beautiful restoration job! It's nice to see the old ones get a new lease on life.

Why not get your neighbour (Sharpe?) to fix up your father's canoe ? A wooden canoe is very tough , when the water is down trade the paddle for a pole and watch the rocks .

No, not Sharpe, they are based in Mann's Mountain, I'm in Upsalquitch. I'm not even sure if Sharpe's builds any of the smaller boats.
I've spent alot of time in that old canoe. Perhaps I'll suggest that Dad pass me along the canoe, since he's never going to use it.

I've met a few of your neighbours over the years , Bud and Marvin T. , Vicki D.(stayed at their camp at Berry Brook) , Sheldon M. (quite a character) . Marvin told me a while ago that he's done work on canoes . How's everyone getting on with their newest neighbour , Mr. I. , I understand they've got their eye on Berry Brook as well .

Bud is my grandfather and Marvin is my uncle. Vicki D is also a cousin(if you've stayed at her camp, you've been past my place. I'm the last house on the road before you hit the dirt). Sheldon is a great family friend and you're right, he is quite a character!
Mr. I is good(my uncle manages their camp....you should see the $250,000 boat shed they built this fall!!). I've heard the rumour that he does have his eye on the Berry Brook stretch and it's quite possible he will get it too. I've also heard that he's convinced the owners of Black's(Watiqua, the stretch below Berry Brook) to lease to them as well..... and one of the other "I" family landed their private helicopter on Two Brooks lawn for "lunch." They are looking to get off the Restigouche because of all the boaters and the idiocy that goes on there. Who knows what will happen??
