Hello Paddlers: Paddlers are largely a cheap yet appreciative group and we all love those Chestnut canoes… so the following free talk on the Chestnut Canoe Company will be of interest. Subject: FW: Chestnut Canoe Talk The Chestnut Canoe Factory in Rabbit Town illustrated talk Nov 10 The Chestnut Canoe has legendary status in the Canadian wilderness landscape, but much less is known about the industrial workers who produced this famous canoe. For most of its history, from 1905 until 1978, the Chestnut Canoe factory was located in the distinctive Fredericton neighbourhood of Rabbit Town. This working-class neighbourhood included a railway station, brick and lumber yards, a feed mill and two boot and shoe factories. By using oral interviews with former workers from the Chestnut Canoe factory, this illustrated talk, by historian and researcher Carol Ferguson, takes a new look at a favourite Fredericton icon and the provincial capital’s most significant industrial neighbourhood. The interviews were carried out as part of the work of the New Brunswick Labour History Project, a Community-University Research Alliance supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The illustrated talk is presented by Fredericton Heritage Trust in partnership with the Fredericton Public Library. For more information, visit the websites of the New Brunswick Labour History Project at www.lhtnb.ca or Fredericton Heritage Trust at www.heritagefredericton.orgWednesday, November 10, 7pm at the Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carleton Street.
