I am newbie and thinking about 3 trips.
Can anyone tell me what the North Branch is like in June. Is it runnable by a newbie or will I being dragging my canoe back to town? My intent is to put in at Little Lake and canoe to Oromocto and home.
Can anyone tell me what the South Branch is like in June. Is it runnable by a newbie or will I being dragging my canoe back to town? My intent is to put in at Nutter Brook and canoe to Oromocto and home.
Can anyone tell if Back Creek in Hoyt is runnable in June say from the hiway to Wirral Lake?

If the spring is wet, you should be able to run the North Branch. There is a ledgey falls most folks run......
Mitchell Amos can tell y0u about the South Branch. He pops in here regularly.
I've run Back Creek from the bridge at Wirral to the Oromocto, and it was easy, some rocks, twisty turns with the odd alder. There was one barb wire fence. I don't know about from Highway 101 though.

there is a falls on the south branch a couple of km upstream of the upermost covered bridge. this river is only runnable with lots of water. there are some nice challenging rapids on the upper part that can be difficult due to the narrowness and the likelyhood of sweepers. the falls are not runnable as far as most canoeists are concerned probably around 15 or 20 feet. there is a rapid above that would swamp most canoes before you got near the falls and would wash you right over them. there is no portage around either side and is not very fun to go around. the lower section bellow the covered bridges is very gentle.

A nice trip here is to start on Shin Creek where it flows south under the bridge on route 785, down to the South O. and on to the covered bridge on the O. I ran it in good water once upon a time, it was free of wood and no bad rapids.
I've heard second-hand stories of starting on Shin Creek way farther up on Route 785, but it looks too small there. The put-in must be up in the woods somewhere. Rumor has it there's a falls.

Not sure about the falls rumour but there is a spot that drops 20m in a km so I'll let you know. Putting in just below the forks (45o33.71, 66o46.58) tomorrow and running down to South Oromocto River. Made no plans for the rest of the week except fish and explore- hopefully be able to float some of the first part!

Just a heads up, we cut a trail on river left around the falls- look for the large downed spruce tree, follow the old trail up the hill, turn right to the cleared section. It is not flagged but it is right below the pool in the mouth of Sand Brook-DO NOT MISS IT!

Recent reports talk of a lot of wood across the lower part of Shin Creek. There used to be fella who cleared out deadfalls here with a chain saw, but that was back, well way back, in the day....

Yes, the last two times I've run it, there were lots of strainers and sweepers in the lower section. It would take a chainsaw and a few tanks of gas to clear them all. Or, a few short drags around and over.
