4 of us paddled a few miles from Spednic Lake Park to a friend of mine's place near Big Island for an overnight camp out. Once we setup camp, we paddled over to Palfry Lodge for a beverage and then had a nice evening campfire. Woke up Sunday morning to howling winds. Although we only had a few miles to cover, 2.5-3.5ft swells made it a harrowing experience. We put the two least experienced paddlers in the two kayaks we had and they made out fine, even had fun surfing the waves. My buddy Colin and I in a 16ft fiberglass canoe with a keel managed to steer and take the waves back to front, but got exhausted, blown nearly to the American shore and past our take out point. We were finally slamed into rocks on an island, took a break, struggled around to the back side of the island and crossed to the Canadian side behind its shelter. The wind was so strong we couldn't make progress against it and I waded the 1.5km up along the shore dragging the pitching canoe behind me. I realize my partner and I lack the skillset of many canoeists on this board, but it was telling for me that two semi experienced paddlers were badly mauled in a canoe, while two guys off the street jumped into kayaks and handled the conditions comfortably. You'll not catch me on a lake without my sea kayak again if I can help it. Thoughts/stories anyone on paddling rough lake conditions in a canoe vs. kayak?

I've never kayaked on a lake, but my times on a windy lake have been the most harrowing. I hope never to find myself in a canoe on a windblown lake again.
