July 5th/09
5 of us put in at the base of dunbar falls and ran the mellow rapids down into the nashwaak. We had to do a small bit of offroading and lowering the boats down a steep rocky hill to the water. I was in my playboat with my headcam going, my brother solo in a canoe and two other good friends navigating through the boulders in their canoe. The footage turned out great and gives a great idea of how fun this section is.
Overall it was a success! The levels were half decent covering most major rocks and causing some great waves to blast through! Maybe someday I'll try out the falls when I see what's under the water when the levels go way down this summer. Also, has anyone ever hiked way up Dunbar stream? I'd like to know if it's worth working my way up to the beginning of it for an adventure down.
The weather decided to shine some sun on us for the majority of the day causing a nasty sunburn. Once on the nashwaak, we enjoyed a leisurely 4 hour paddle to the bridge in marysville. The small rapids were a fun time in marysville as well, a nice way to cool off after a full day paddling. I tried surfing one wave, but I quickly realized I haven't quite figured that out yet.
The fish were plenty, but we only seemed to pull out bass... where did all the trout go?
All in all it was an excellent day with no hangups. I recommend for all to try the base of the dunbar when the levels are high. It's a great way to start a paddle for the day. It's a quick 6 minute run from the falls to the nashwaak, and it's clean with nothing to worry about.
Happy paddling folks!
Oh, one last thing... Watch out for fishermen about halfway down, there's a nice hole some folks like to fish. Make sure you can yell loud for them to get out of the way.
