My 11 year old daughter and I ran the Oromocto on Saturday and Sunday. The hydrometric data was showing just a bit less than .8m in Tracy. I wouldn't recommend going with the water much lower than this with loaded canoes...we had to pick and choose our way through a few 'bumpy' spots. I was using my 15' O/T Pathfinder.
We put in at the jaws around 11, and fished down to the dead water (just needed a couple trout for supper). About where Little lake goes in to the river is where we started seeing the gaspereau. When we got to the falls it was absolutely amazing; something every kid should get a chance to see. Emma could stand on one flat rock and watch them swim all around and over her boots! We camped a couple of miles below the falls, and got good and tarped for the coming rains. Slept in until 8 next morning, had a nice breakfast then just drifted our way, all of the way, to the bridge. Even farther down the river it was still so cool to see all of the gaspereau; you couldn't help but hit them when you paddled!
Not much fishing because of the gaspereau, Emma lost a couple of trout, one maybe 16 inches (beginning of the sea-run?). Other than the falls, which we portaged due to all of our gear, this river is a fantastic little playground to take the young ones on. It does take a very kind person willing to drop you off in the middle of nowhere, but other than that I recommend this trip. We took out in Tracy around 3:30 on Sunday, but spent plenty of time having a nice shore lunch, and just drifting along
Took some nice pictures and clips; as soon as I figure out how to get them here, I'll post them.
