I know some will think a side mount outboard to be sacreligous but tough...sometimes motorization just plain makes things fun on the lakes and deadwaters. Has anyone here got experiance with mounting a 2.5 hp 4stroke on the side of a 16' royalex prospector? I plan to give it a try for doing some fishing/trolling. I understand that you have to compensate for the thrust and wieght being off to the side but other than that, I assume the craft would sail along quite nicely. What are your thoughts. I don't have a canoe yet but I'm thinking of a Nova Craft or Evergreen Prospector 16. Given that I have 3 young kids to bring along, I'm half thinking of the 17 footer, but prefer the 16 for the option of soloing and the fact that I'll likely only be day tripping or going on 1 nighter trips at the longest given that life is so busy.

A friend of mine has a side mount for his xl tripper, but it slips and never did work right. From my experience there a tricky rig, but it would be nice when the wind won't cooperate.

ya we ran the motor between 2 boats all wkd but after one portage we did hook the engine up to just one boat and gave er a run around. listed to one side hard whick may wear on you after 3 or 4 days.
all I can say is 2 canoes strapped together with a motor is a d**n fine way to travel except for that blatting motor. Pete
