Monday April 14 and Wednesday April 16 2008
Monday's water level was nice.... 5-6 inches above the concrete lip under Estey's Bridge and Sandwith Farm Gage was reading .63 - .64 on the internet. Same on Tuesday.
This was lots of water.
Ice and snow lined the Stream, and Neopreen is essential.
Put In was at Estey's Bridge on the Royal Road.
Take Out was where the Stream comes closest to the 105 at a big culvert a few kms past the light for the Brookside Mall.
On both the Monday and Tuesday runs there were more behind-rock eddies than my rusty-ass paddling skills could catch in the time available. We did it in something over an hour mahy and hour and one half.
This is one of my favorite runs, a great season opener, do'able on a work evening, lost of behind rock eddies, and enough wildlife to fool you into thinking you are not that close to Fredericton.
Monday April 14 Paddlers were Sammy Solo, Bethie J, and "The Real Deal" Paul M.
On Thursday, Mike G. and I, with shore support from iMac, cut out part of a strainer from a point a few hundred yards below Estie's Bridge at that confluence. We could not safely cut out the entire tree as to do so would have ment standing in rushing water up to your chest with bottom trash and submerged snags going up as high as your knees. No thanks.
We did clear a path on river-left. But on river-right, as you paddle down river, there is still somthing that wants to kill you. Anyone who gets pinned up against what the remains the tree and doesn't jump out to the high side before the canoe's up river gunnel gets pushed under water and the canoe rolls, can expect to be pinning underwater for a day, or at least until people with some equipmemt arrive to free your corpse.
We finished the cutting project by winding some marking tape around the end of what is left.
Mike G. and I had a great run, less rust, more eddies, and saw a lot of Beavers...even had one follow us for about 5 minutes.
There is one Beaver in there that looked like a furry pig... big fat son-of-a-gun.
We also saw about a dozen deer... but there were along side the Royal Road!!! So drive s-l-o-w-l-y on the Royal Road
For the next 30 days (maybe longer) you can find pics at..
