Hi All
I'm an ex-NBer, currently living in Oakville, Ontario, and took up sea kayaking a few years ago. I almost always come "home" in the summer for a couple of weeks, and this past summer, I came with a friend and fellow paddler. We both own Boreal designs kayaks, which we brought along, and we spent 9 days paddling out of the 14. We did the St Croix, from St Andrews to Dochet Island (okay, it's now called St Croix Island - I'm dating myself!) on one day; another day, we put in at Blair's Pt in Oak Bay and went down to the Island, then upriver to the Ledge "Loop". On another occasion we did a portion of the Macaquadavic, from Long Lookum down to my cousin's camp above the flume, and on yet another day, we put in at The St George Day Adventure center and paddled up the Macaquadavic almost to Second Falls, then detoured into Lake Utopia on the return.
During the second week while staying at Mactaquac, we put in at the Small Craft Aquatic center and went up the Nashwaak one day as far as the cotton mill in Maryville (I think); another day we went upriver. The local marine chart carries a warning about going above a certain point due to the dam's outflow, but on advice from the Aquatic center, we went up as far as Hart Island, and had no problem; we also spoke with a lady who says she regularly paddles down from the salmon hatchery with no trouble.
There is so much fabulous water to paddle just in that southwest corner, yet there seems to be absolutely no resources for anyone visiting the area. I'd love to explore the St Croix above the Grand Falls flowage, but I have no idea what sort of water, or obstacles there are, and can't even find a decent map. I do know some areas, but not others. If there are any other kayakers aboard here, I would appreciate some discussion of other places to paddle. As stated, my boat is a 16'7" sea kayak, but I've done some rivers, and some baby rapids with it - class one only.
This could be a great site with a bit more information offered, with a view to educating visitors. Or is there a resource somewhere that I haven't been able to find.
Looking forward to another 2 weeks at "home" in August and some new water to paddle!
