I've always hated digging in the bottom of my barrels to get my "kitchen" crap on canoe trips. Simple solution was to build a Wannigan. Bottom and ends are made of laminated 3/4" pine and cedar. Sides are 1/4" birch plywood. Width was designed to hold the rubber dish tray (just under 13"). Oddly enough I'd sooner boil up some water and wash dishes in the bucket as opposed to in the river. Removable trays installed for extra storage and easy access to small items. Top is made of 1/2" poplar plywood, edged with butternut. Checker board added for the kids. The box itself works as a seat or a small camp table. I'll be adding weather stripping to the underside of the lid, should be somewhat water tight but we'll see.

Looks good.
I look forward to seeing it in action this spring on the Miramichi.

Sweet! Funny, I have been thinking about building a Wannigan all winter and here I am back on this site, inspired!

Used the wannigan on out spring trip down the Miramichi. Worked out great for storage of kitchen items and small stuff.
It also doubled as a secure spot to store my axe.
It even worked out as a table in the bush.
As I do with most of my canoes and related items, this one eventually made it to kijiji to sell and fund buying a portage pack (Duluth Pack #4 on its way....).
Oddly enough it's now in the possession of Grant, aka thatsapaddlin
Enjoy.

Good job loading your boat, Jamie. I wish I could do a neat job like that.
