Well Last weekend we ventured out on the Nepisiguit River.
We put in at the Metal bridge near Middle Landing.
Beautiful trip right up to the Pabineau Falls with no portages at all until you get to the falls. (about 9kms and took us about 2.5 hours including good long lunch break and not going too hard at all.)
We saw 3 bears, 1 deer, 2 salmon, many ducks... Kids loved it.
From there we canoed down river all the way to the Pump station at the first Hydro line crossing.
If I were to do it again I would stop at the Train bridge, about 6.5 km from the falls and only a couple portages in moderate to low level waters. If you keep left at the train bridge you have a quite a hill to go up but you can drive right up to the train bridge.
From the train bridge to the Pump House about 2-3 kms (off the map) it was not very much fun. We were not prepared to run class 4 rapids with the kids (ages 6 and 12 with me) and we did not have any floats, so we had to do numerous portages around these. about 2.5 hours for the last 3 kms.
If you are a little braver and prepared for swamping the canoe with floats and such you might want to try to run the rapids and drops between the train bridge and the Pump House.
My Buddy and his two teenage boys went over one of these just after the train bridge and they got a little wet. It was pretty fun to talk about after the fact though.
All in all a Great trip enjoyed by all, at least until we got to the train bridge. The kids enjoyed the class 3 rapids and splashes and stuff.
I will add some pics later once I get them developed.
Trip summary:
- About 18-19kms (not exactly sure because we were off the
map).
- It took us 8 hours but 3 were doing the last 3 kms.
- about 5.5-6 hrs to train bridge and only 1 significant portage around the falls (.75km)
Looking forward to going up river a bit further and coming down to the falls. I hear it's a great trip.
Later,
Dave
