We paddled the Salmon River this weekend, putting in at the Bronson Road bridge and taking out near Gaspereau Forks, about 50km total. The water level at Castaway was 10.7m. Depths were a bit shallow in places during the first 1/3rd of the river, but we scraped only a couple of times. Depths were quite deep for the rest of the river. The current was surprisingly quick. We covered 35km on Saturday with 7 hours of easy paddling, but we didn't stop to fish or float. There are lots of camping possibilities along the river and the banks were sandy and comfortable for tenting.
Although it's a popular party river with the locals, I had not heard much about canoe tripping on the Salmon. It's a beautiful river with a wilderness feel, but never too far from a road and with easy access points. I understand that it holds enough water from below Lake Stream for mid summer trips. It deserves more attention.
