Well, if your a novice canoeist, the Miramichi in high water is not a good place to start. My canoe and two others put in at half moon, about two and a half hours later, we were all drying ourselves at the camps across from McKeil brook.
I guess quite a few canoes had problems at the area called the "narrows" (I think that's what it's called). The water swamped our boats very quickly. Some guys from those camps managed to rescue the two other canoes... unfortunately mine continued downstream. If any of those guys read this, thanks again for the hospitality.
I didn't really get to know any of them because myself and a couple of buddies decided to walk the Irving roads out to civilization (if you can call Deersdale civilization). After walking, and hitching a couple of times, we finally made it to our vehicles in Boisetown by 6 o'clock. From 7:30 to 1:00 in the morning we drove around the Deersdale Irving roads trying to find a way back to our buddies at the the McKeil camps. We managed to get out to them on Sunday after talking with the daytime Irving security guy, who seemed much more knowledgeable than the nighttime guy (thanks for trying anyway Elwood).
So what started out as a two day trip, ended in under 3 hours. I had left my name and number with some of the guys at the camp. Last night (Sunday night), I got a call from a kayaker (thanks DS), who gave me a report on the location of my canoe.
So I have a question for all you Miramichi gurus. The kayaker told me that my canoe was basically pinned on a rock (still looking in good shape though) a couple of kms down from the next camp below the McKeil camps but before the rangers camp. Does anyone have any idea how to get to this area, or how to mount a rescue of a pinned canoe? I tried to get out through Maple grove but it was gated. If anyone can offer any suggestions or help, it would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone can provide an update, please do (454-5889). It's a yellow discovery 169, attached are several wetbags and buckets.
On a final note, the loss of my canoe has certainly not deterred me from the Miramichi. Up until McKeil brook, we were having such a good time, really nice area. I think maybe I'll keep an eye on water levels next time though :-)
