Finally got to run from Gorby Gulch to Stanley on the weekend, level at Durham was 18.45 (put in Sat AM) to 18.35 (take out Sun) and it was a great level- no scraping. Can't believe I haven't run this before as it was really a beautiful stretch. If you haven't done it, put it on your list! Maybe after it rains again...

I've never paddled this stretch ... but would really (really) like to do it.
Any chance you could describe where you put in (how you got there)? Was it on the "Valley Forest Road"?
Also ... I've heard legend of a terrible stretch of un-runnable water on the Upper Nashwaak? Did you encounter this on your trip?

drive down the 107 (the road that runs through williamsburg and napadogan) go past napadogan until deersdale there will be a dirt road crossing. turn left if you see a transformer station a few metres in youre on the right road. drive 15 km and you will hit a bridge with a camp next to it. this is gorby gulch. if you don't have intermediate whitewater skills, this is not the river for you. in medium water levels this river is fun and has a lot of good rapids. the rapid at narrows mountain looks very inviting at first. if you miss the portage at medium low water you may be able to eddy out before the bad part if you realize that this is the one. this doesn't look like a fun swim at low water, at high water it would be very bad.the rapids right after the narrows are nice at the level that me and river addict did them at, lots of rocks to maneuver around. in high water the rocks are gone but the haystacks can be quite large and easily swamp the unprepared or inexperienced. Mitchell has a good story on the first time he ran this at high water. its on kens site somewhere.

there is a nice campsite just past where little nashwaak lake flows in. its on the same side on a old giant gravelbar. nice level area for lots of tents. not much shelter or many trees for a tarp but nicer than the spots above on the atv trail.
